"The Stugis of the North"
THUNDER IN THE GLENS
Although once a thriving outdoors activity and ski centre in the 1970's and 80's, after the creation of a bypass which caused the major north-south road running through the highlands to skirt the town, Aviemore's fortunes had been in decline.
Recognising that there was an opportunity not only to put Dunedin HOG but also Aviemore on the map, in 1996 Bob contacted the local tourist board along with a number of local businesses and arranged a meeting. At the time, Bob also knew that the location for the national HOG Rally for 1997 had not been determined by Harley-Davidson(R) UK, and, with the support of Alistair (Ali) Robertson, owner of the then sole Harley-Davidson dealer in Scotland, met with H-D UK management and persuaded them to allow Dunedin to host the event in Aviemore.
Following successful presentations to Aviemore tourist agencies, Scottish Enterprise and local businesses showing them how the HOG event could be used as a template for similar future events, Bob received united approval from both Aviemore and Harley-Davidson to create the first Thunder in the Glens.
The first rally (also at the time dubbed "The Sturgis of the North") took place in 1997 and the rest, as they say, is history. But, without the many, many Dunedin HOG members, some of whom are no longer with us, who have contributed immensely over the years Thunder just couldn't happen.....Ali, Bud, Sue, Stuart, Mary, Ian, Brian, Sandy, Jackie, Graham, George, Liz, Norrie (the VideoMeister) and so on. It's thanks to them and so many others that Thunder in the Glens is the best Chapter run rally in the world (and apologies if you didn't get a mention - you know who you are!).
Please use the "DUNEDIN HOG" tab at the top of the page to go straight to Dunedin Hog's site for more information on the Chapter as well as future Thunder in the Glens events.
